I have included some Twentieth Century, especially those of Iona and Ballater, which if you know about them, and are fortunate enough to spot one, will easily repay your investment. Not long ago, while checking on the availability of a book published some years ago by a friend of mine, I Googled my original Directory of Scottish Provincial Silversmiths. There were four copies available - the cheapest at $400, none are left today! Sadly!!! I only have my own library copy left, however, this updated book, with more than 24 times the number of marks displayed in the original, and almost 50% more marks listed, has to be a bargain which can pay for itself many times over with one transaction, see below. The original Directory is often referred to as the bible for collectors of Scottish silver. This later book is far more comprehensive, and can be signed or dedicated, if so wished, as I am the author. Please ask on the order or send an email. Throughout the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, many Scottish towns had town marks, with silversmiths applying their own marks. There is no other publication with such a wide coverage of the silver marks from all the Scottish Provincial Towns. It lists over 2000 sets of marks, and contains photographs of more than 800 of them, illustrating the vast majority of punches used. (There are far more listed here than in Jackson's Gold & Silver Marks). The book is in a convenient A5 size, fitting in a pocket or small bag, ready for unobtrusive checking of the marks. The few Edinburgh marks listed are examples of the scarce items which Provincial silversmiths were persuaded to send in to be legally assayed. Most Scottish Provincial marks were on items denying the hated English Government the duty they demanded on silver items. As a result, these pieces were illegally made, adding romance to scarcity as reasons for why they are so collectable! Some Scottish Provincial silver teaspoons have fetched as much as £1000, in auction, EACH. The usual cost of many other items exceeds £100, with some, occasionally, unknowingly offered on eBay and other auctions at minimal prices. By taking advantage of the quantity and quality of marks illustrated in this book, you can still pick up examples for pennies. Further, this book may give information about items in your collection, which would be invaluable if you decide to sell on eBay or in other ways. Purchase of this book can save its cost with one transaction, by validating your hopes, or by warning it is not as offered. A very relevant example of feedback was received in October 2016, from someone who only purchased a copy that March:- Hi Just wanted to give you some feedback on your excellent provincial guide to Scottish silver. Since purchasing your guide I've picked up several really nice examples of Scottish silver including a James Erskine soup ladle and a William McMaster toddy ladle from antique fair in Australia and a carboot market, both of which were on sale as plated silver. The book's paid for itself many times over and has opened up a really exciting new collecting possibility for me. Thanks so much Pete, Australia Collectors of Scottish Provincial Silver will find that this book will help you to spot the sleepers, verify examples on offer and check out your own collection. Dealers - With this book, using all the photographs of marks, you can verify your stock to potential customers, and locate sleepers. Auctioneers - With this book, you can lower the chance of sleepers slipping past you, identify items for your catalogue and alert your special customers. Is this book necessary, as you may have a copy of my previous one? Dealers in the London Silver Vaults gave an emphatic “Yes”. This A5 book is 160 pages. The over 800 photographs of marks gives a coverage of the vast majority of the individual punches utilised over the years, many being used by more than one smith. Included in the listings are some highly collectable Twentieth Century marks from smiths operating in Iona, Ballater and other sites. When I have listed a mark, but been unable to photograph it, if it is shown in another book on silver, the title, page and figure number of that book is noted in my listings. The book begins with 18 pages of introductory and explanatory information, including bibliography and Scottish museums listings. The next 93 pages displays, grouped into the towns where they worked, the listings of Scottish Provincial silversmiths, in alphabetical order. The listings are shown on the left hand pages, and the applicable photographs on the right hand pages (typical example shown). The towns covered are Aberdeen, Arbroath, Ayr, Ballater, Banff, Canongate, Cupar, Dumfries, Dundee, Elgin, Fochabers, Forres, Glasgow (pre 1819), Greenock, Inverness, Iona, Kilmarnock, Kincardine O'Neill, Leith, Montrose, Oban, Paisley, Perth, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Tain and Wick. The last 44 pages give the overall listing of all these smiths' marks in alphabetical order, so that you can then easily turn to the relevant town listing to locate the image of the mark. The front cover illustration displays 25 of the town marks, selected from those shown in the book The book is A5 size, 210mm x 149mm x 11mm thick, with a weight of about 350gms. For more information, please see my website http://silverturner.co.uk/ I must note, for accuracy, that the colour of the cover, shown in the photo above, is the colour requested, it was proof checked, and is even what my camera sees. The actual colour is actually more mauve, for some reason, but I have found that purchasers are perfectly happy with this variation. Condition: New, direct from the publisher. ISBN 978-0-9926681-0-5, Age: Post-1940, Composition: Collectable Information book
